Town Builds - The 17 Buildings and Three Pillars
Seventeen upgradeable buildings across economy, offence and defense pillars are official. Build thinking for pillar choice, openings and mid-run pivots.
Seventeen buildings, three pillars, ten nights — the build is the run. The official guidance is unusually direct: “Tailor your strategy every run — focus on pure economy, automated offensive towers, or impenetrable defenses.” Three named philosophies, seventeen ways to express them, and a dome that grades your answer nightly. Choosing a Pillar (community framework on official pillars)
Economy is the compounding pillar — it wins long games. If mana buys everything (it does, officially), then buildings that make mana are buildings that buy the other sixteen buildings later. Its weakness is the clock: economy builds are weakest exactly when the first champions arrive, on a young town’s shallow defenses.
Offence is the automation pillar — towers fight the “few hundred toothy horrors” (official) so your zap can do precision work. Its strength scales with density: the more the game sends, the more each tower earns. Its weakness is champions — a boss that outlives your tower line meets an undefended town.
Defense is the exam-condition pillar — shields and fortification convert the officially stated stakes (“lose the dome, lose everything”) into survivable mistakes. Its weakness is passivity: a fortress that never turns a profit dies rich on night ten with nothing banked but stone.
The honest default for a new governor: economy-led with defense second — compounding income with enough dome to reach the champions that pay Salt. Specialize harder as your Chart grows. (pillars official; ranking community)
Opening Orders (community estimates)
- Economy opening: night 1 income building, night 2 income upgrade + first shield patch, night 3 second income line. Payback logic in our mana economy guide does the rest.
- Offence opening: night 1 first tower, night 2 tower + shield patch, night 3 second tower before the champion exam. Towers are income too — everything they kill, you keep.
- Defense opening: night 1-2 shields and repairs, night 3 economy seed behind the wall. Slowest start, sturdiest mid-run; pairs best with personal-power Chart traits.
Mid-Run Pivots (community estimates)
The official failure rule makes pivots expensive — buildings forfeit with the dome — so pivot inside a run, not after it: if night 5’s champion shredded a shield face, night 6’s mana buys fortification before growth. The rule of thumb: never two consecutive nights strengthening the same weakness while another stands unpatched. The five maps compound this — a narrow shore map rewards defence less than a wide one, and pillar choice should follow the ground. (maps count official; pivot doctrine community)
The Chart Turns Preference Into Identity (community analysis)
Prestige tiers officially offer “a vast selection of permanent meta-progression traits tailored to your playstyle.” Practically: your run pillar becomes a testbed, and your Chart purchases ratify the winner. An economy-led player should chart income traits first, an offence player zap-and-tower traits, a defense player shield and repair traits — see our nights guide for how Salt, the Chart’s only confirmed input, is farmed. By prestige depth, the question flips: the Chart starts choosing the run. (Chart and prestige: official; trait routing: community)
What This Page Will Grow
The seventeen-building roster — names, costs, upgrade lines — is in-game data this wiki will not invent. As community evidence lands, each pillar section above gains its building table with sources per row. Until then, every claim here traces to the store page or is marked as estimate.
Five Questions for Any Purchase (community framework)
- Payback night? How many nights until it returns its cost — in mana made or damage the dome no longer takes?
- Pillar fit? Does it deepen your chosen pillar, or dilute it? Seventeen buildings reward depth, not spread. (building count official)
- Map fit? On this shore — wide, narrow, cliffed — does its value rise or fall? Five maps means the answer changes with the ground. (maps official)
- Champion answer? Does it help specifically at the nightly finale, where the devastation officially lives?
- Forfeit weight? If the dome falls, is this purchase one you regret? The failure rule makes every building a bet with the coast as the stake. (rule official)
A purchase that passes all five is a run-defining building; one that fails three is mana wasted mid-ladder. The framework is deliberately map- and roster-agnostic — it survives the in-game specifics this wiki has not invented.
A Cross-Table the Community Will Fill (placeholder, honestly marked)
| Pillar × Map behaviour | Open strand | Rocky cove | Cliff town | …two more shores |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Economy | ? | ? | ? | ? |
| Offence | ? | ? | ? | ? |
| Defense | ? | ? | ? | ? |
Every cell marked “?” is community evidence waiting — run a pillar on a map, note the night you died on, and the pattern fills itself. The table’s shape (3 pillars official × 5 maps official) is already true; only the cells are pending.
Build Failure Autopsies (community)
Three archetypal deaths, three build lessons: Died night 4, towers intact, shields paper — offence without defense meets its first real champion; lesson, the finale is a siege, buy fortification before the third tower. Died night 7, rich and unguarded — economy hoarded past its payback window; lesson, the shop closes with the dome, spend into stone. Died night 10, balanced and mediocre at everything — three half-pillars, none strong enough for the exam; lesson, seventeen buildings reward depth. Autopsy your own runs against these three and the next Chart purchase usually names itself. (failure rule official; archetypes community)

FAQ
Is there a best pillar? Officially no — the game is built for tailored strategies. Practically, economy-led is the most forgiving start. (community estimate)
Can you respec mid-run? Not documented. Assume no; the dome’s failure rule implies commitment. (community note)
